How can I distinguish between canine influenza and kennel cough?

The symptoms of kennel cough and canine influenza are similar – coughing, sneezing and a runny nose. This means you can’t really distinguish between the two diseases based on clinical signs. If your vet suspects influenza, they’ll order some tests from your local laboratory to confirm the diagnosis. Nasal swabs will show infection with influenza virus after 4 days, and blood tests will detect antibodies to canine influenza after 7 days of illness.

Treatment of a viral infection is similar no matter which virus is involved. Your vet may prescribe supportive therapies such as intravenous fluids or antibiotics if a secondary bacterial infection is present, and you can provide lots of tender loving care. | 03.09.16 @ 12:46
