Do dogs die from canine influenza?

Yes, but it’s not common. While most dogs will become ill when they are exposed to canine influenza, it’s not usually a severe illness. Some however will develop the severe form of the disease with fever, pneumonia and labored breathing. The mortality rate of infection is thought to be less than 10% and it usually occurs in dogs with the severe form of the disease.

Because it’s highly contagious and will make most dogs sick, it’s well worth preventing your dog being infected. Basic hygiene such as cleaning communal dog areas with disinfectant and washing hands are important. The virus is also thought to survive in the environment for up to 2 days and on clothing for up to 24 hours. If your dog is likely to spend time in the company of other dogs or in areas where other dogs visit regularly, such as boarding kennels or dog parks, speak to your vet about having them vaccinated. | 02.04.16 @ 06:13
